Introduction
Butterfly is an assassin that I like to call the cleanup queen. She has a unique passive that, for every kill or assist she earns, regens 12% of her lost health and resets all of her cooldowns to 0. Basically, if even one person on the enemy team is low on health, they are going to give her the option of doing her full combo twice-- which is going to do quite a bit of damage. This will lead to another kill, and another, and in the end you win the team fight.
Skill Build
Backstab, Sword Propel, Whirlwind
As with most heroes, we max the ultimate first. As an ult, Backstab has an amazingly short cooldown. At level 4 it has a 13.5 second cooldown, at max level it’s 11.1 seconds. So, the per-level on cooldown isn't great, but it gains 250 damage per level. This ability causes you to blink behind the lowest health enemy in range. On top of that, it gives you 60% damage reduction and 50% movement speed increase for 1 second. As short as that sounds, the moment you jump on someone, generally they rush to blow everything they can on you. On a 10 second cooldown you can easily kill a target, do some damage, and be ready to use it again.
Damage: 525/775/1025
Cooldown: 13.5/12.3/11.1
Sword Propel is a short-ranged skill shot that does some okay damage, but more importantly is the buff it gives you. It gives you a 50% bonus attack speed buff. This is the main reason we go for things like The Beast, and Fafnir's Talon.
Damage: 390/440/490/540/590/640
Cooldown: 8.6/8/7.4/6.8/6.2/5.6
Whirlwind does an arc shaped attack that slows enemies by 50% for 2 seconds. You will mostly be using this to catch up to enemies or get away from them.
Damage: 225/275/325/375/425/475
Recommended Talents
Punish, Flicker, Disrupt, Execute
Punish is your jungle ability of course. Making clearing the games that much better It deals a good amount of damage to jungle minions and also stuns them for a second.
Flicker is going to be a good ability regardless of who you are playing. Any ability that causes you to get out of a bad situation instantly for free is good. Just be sure you are good enough at controlling the direction you blink towards, and learn its range. It can get you over most walls, but not all of them.
Disrupt delays towers for 5 seconds on a 60 second cooldown. Plenty to let you dive people low and at their tower, or making those who camp the tower in fear of your ganks even more helpless.
Execute deals 16% of lost health at true damage. It’s a great way to finish off enemies that just barely survive. Not to mention, it ensures you the reset to your cooldowns and a short burst of health regen.
Items
Fenrir's Tooth, Sonic boots, Sword of Longinus, The Beast, Ancestral Glory, Fafnir's Talon
Start with tier 1 boots and rush Fenrir's Tooth. We rush Fenrir's Tooth to help with our other abilities. Enemies below 50% take a bonus of 30% of the damage.
Finish boots. Tier 2 boots are always a good investment as a second item as they will allow you to get around the map sooner to help your team.
Next, we grab Sword of Longinus due to its passive. It reduces armor on a target you deal damage to by 50 for 5 seconds, stacking 5 times. 250 armor reduced by itself makes this item worth getting.
Ancestral Glory should be grabbed whenever you feel like you might get too close to being taken out by the enemy.
The last items can basically be bought whenever you feel it should. The beast is usually my 3rd or 4th item to help me sustain with the 25% lifesteal the item gives.
Arcana
Onslaught, Assassinate, Skewer
Anything that gives you attack damage is preferred. Since all of your abilities scale extremely well with higher attack damage.
Early Game
Early-game Butterfly is a tad weaker. You won't be able to freely flatten people yet, so I would recommend farming as normal in lane or jungle till you see an opening or mid game. Make sure to farm safely so that you aren't forced to go back to base too often that you fall behind. Unless your team is doing well, you won't be able to carry yourself back easily.
Middle Game
This is where Butterfly shines. The enemy carries aren't big enough to 3-shot you, and tanks aren't so tanky you can't kill them. This is the time, we want to force small fights in small groups. If any enemy gets low enough for you to kill, do it. Your whole point right now is to scale before the enemy knows what happened.
Late Game
This is the point in the game where you’ve either failed, and the enemy carry will do more than you, or you did well and you can basically 1-shot the enemy by yourself. Throw in a good team fight and you can only go further. Due to your high attack speed I would also recommend helping to take towers, as you might be the best person on your team to do it depending on the ranged carry.
FAQ/Tips
Butterfly gains her passive health even if she assists, so make sure to hit everyone at least once in a team fight quickly in case your team kills someone you weren't focusing.
Butterfly's ult jumps behind the lowest-health character. So. if you wait to use this ability further into the fight, you can use it as a form of escape. If anyone is jumping on you hard in fights use this to continue fighting who you want to kill, instead of getting pinned down.
Using Whirlwind you can slow the entire enemy team in team fights, using resets you can constantly apply this debuff.
Matchups
Aleister, Easy
Aleister seeks to do his damage by applying stacks for his passive. Some of these are skill shots. Keep moving and burst him down before he applies everything. Do keep in mind that he still does a good amount of damage, but in a quick brawl, you should be doing considerably more.
Diaochan, Easy
Diaochan has no ability to escape without a talent. While she can slow and stun, you should constantly be moving as Butterfly making you difficult to hit. All you need after that is to burst through her low health pool.
Krixi, Easy
Krixi is another hero who has a low health pool and no way of getting away from Butterfly. A lot of her damage also comes from her big skill-shot that returns to her. If you can, stay on the opposite side of her from your team. If she decides to cast this at you, your team is spared a good chunk of damage. If she feels your team is the real target, you take less damage. Don't give her the option of firing it at both of you.
Violet, Easy
Violet’s abilities are mainly skill-shots. One of them make her roll away from you. Keep this in mind when fighting her, as you can use your ultimate to make sure she doesn't get away. Make sure to stay on the opposite side of her from your team if you can, as she will have to choose to shoot at you or your team with her ultimate. If she starts to fire it your way, use your ult to dodge it. You will leap faster then she fires, and no one will take that damage.
Mina, Hard
Mina makes your job a nightmare. Any surprise burst you have from leaping on the carry gets turned into you mindlessly running at the Mina after she ults. This taunt with her pull is going to cause you a headache if she does it right. I'd recommend holding onto your ult until she ults so that you can escape with it. If she hits enough people it will only jump onto her however. So, try to learn how they play her, and work around her accordingly.
Alice, Hard
Alice has the ability to quickly and instantly give herself and her team around her a giant shield. Mixed with her area of effect slow and stun, she has a mildly short cooldown. You can basically expect her to use it the moment you jump in. Any target you wanted to kill will suddenly be more difficult to kill, and you will be standing on Alice's AOE abilities.
Batman, Hard
Batman has a short stun with invis. Chances are, you will be seen running at whomever it is you wish to attack in a team fight, and a good Batman will wait for that moment to attack you. Considering how short his stun cooldown is, you can be sure that he will greatly reduce your burst. Assuming he doesn't just kill you. Since he has more single target burst than Butterfly does.
Grakk, Hard
Grakk has the ability to pull you a great distance off of your target, or even cause you to engage when you are not ready to start. His ultimate will also keep you on him for a long while. You can Flicker out of the ultimate after he lands it on you. Makes sure to take Flicker against him, or you can hope your ult will get you out of it.
