Introduction
Chaugnar is an off-tank support that excels in assisting his team in chasing down kills and catching enemies out of position. Due to his low purchase amount he is a great character to buy for new players. He is a very strong character that has a large impact on the game without having to farm as much as your teammates. Chaugnar can do a lot with just a few items making him one of the most disruptive and feared supports in Arena of Valor.
Skill Build
Void Cleanse: Every time Chaugnar uses Energy Surge he removes all crowd control effects and reduces damage taken by 10% while also granting a 20% movement speed boost for 2 seconds.
Energy Surge: Long range, large cone that does magic damage and slows for 50%. Triggers Void Cleanse.
Shockwave: Chaugnar does magic damage around him increasing by 30% for every cast stacking up 2 times. Shockwave also reduces the cooldown of Energy Surge by one second.
Chaos Protection: Removes all CC’s from Chaugnar as well as all allies nearby as well as making them immune to cc for .5 seconds and Chaugnar immune for 3 seconds. During these 3 seconds Shockwave is free and has a reduced cooldown.
Energy Surge combined with the Void Cleanse passive makes it one of the strongest single abilities in the game just from the number of raw stats it gives while still dealing damage and providing utility for the team. Using Energy Surge on cooldown is a great way to stay mobile while also damaging and disrupting enemies. Chaugnar wants to use the movement speed boost from Void Cleanse to get into the enemy backline before spamming Shockwave in combination with Chaos Protection. Chaugnar can get off around three Energy Surges during the duration of Chaos Protection which in turn reduces the cooldown of Energy Surge by three seconds. Being able to get off multiple Energy Surges during a fight is huge in terms of how much raw power is being thrown out for a basic ability.
Recommended Talents
Heal: Because Chaugnar is played primarily as a support heal is a great option to help his team in a fight and is a great swing while in lane for the 2v2.
Sprint: Another viable option as it helps Chaugnar chase down enemies or stay on top of them allowing him to get off as many Shockwaves as he can during Chaos Protection.
Items
Phoenix Tear: Because Chaugnar is not going to get as much gold as a solo laner he has to make compromises in his build. Instead of upgrading into an Orb of Magi, it is better to enjoy the sustain benefits of Phoenix tear without invest for the AP/HP scaling passive. Every gold coin matters in a supports build and this is a great place to save.
Sonic Boots: One of Chaugnar’s favorite targets is the enemy marksman, making Sonic boots a great itemization choice against them. Because their primary damage is normal attacks these boots are best option for laning against a marksman.
Frosty’s Revenge: Another very cheap item that helps Chaugnar do his job without having to invest a large sum of gold. If Frosty’s gave health it would be the most ideal item for Chaugnar, even without the HP it gives everything else he wants. AP, Magic Defense, Movement Speed and a passive that gives his abilities even more utility in the form of a 25% slow. Frosty’s makes Shockwave a near permanent slow when used during Chaos Protection.
Crimson Banner: This item is a massive chunk of HP and a good sum of armor for that much gold. The passive is the most important part of the item as it restores a large sum of health for earning a kill or assist. It is very hard for Chaugnar not to earn an assist on a kill during a teamfight meaning this item will most likely get is value in every fight.
The Aegis: Chaugnar is almost always in either the front of the fight soaking damage or in the backline of the enemy disrupting the enemy carries. This means he is almost constantly taking damage meaning he can utilize the spirit bond passive of Aegis to its full. Constantly slowing not only the attack speed but also the movement speed of the entire enemy team. The passive alone on this item makes it worth the buy, add on the fact it grants a hefty chunk of cooldown speed and armor and it is a core item in any Chaugnar build.
Medallion of Troy: Games normally don’t last long enough for Chaugnar to reach his last item, but if they do Medallion is a great item to give him a good amount of tankiness in the form of a Magic defense shield passive as well as a flat 1000 HP bonus. Also the item grants 10% cooldown speed meaning Chaos protection can be up more often to get you team as of any situation they find themselves in.
Arcana
9x [Violate 3] gives 4.2 ability power and 2.4 Magic Pierce each. Chaugnar has great base damage but it never hurts to add a little more to help with clearing waves.
9x [Undying 3] gives 60 HP and 4.5 HP per 5 each. Because a lot of items work off of % max HP, having a larger starting HP makes those items more valuable.
9x [Mythril 3] grants 5 Armor and Magic Defense each. Simple Arcana that helps against both the Marksman and Support in the 2v2 matchup.
Early Game
Chaugnar’s main job is to help his Marksman and his teammates succeed at all costs to himself. Start the game by heading into a side lane with your marksman and making sure they are protected against the enemy lane and any possible ganks. If you are able to force your opponents back, you can leave the lane to gank so that your marksman gets solo gold and EXP while you try to make plays around the map. Try to communicate with your jungler to have a very potent three man gank on the mid lane!
Mid Game
Once your lane's tower is down you want to switch lanes with the other side laner and start to whittle down all other outer towers. If you take the tower early enough, you can call down your jungle and mid laner to take the abyssal dragon with the gold advantage. At this point you can start to leave the marksman on his own and start roaming with either solo lane or jungle to get kills on out of position enemies.
Late Game
Chaugnar excels in late game fights as he is not dangerous enough to warrant being focused first but he does enough that he can’t be ignored leaving him in a position where he is only being damaged by one or two enemies while he does AOE damage to the entire enemy team. Use the speed boost to get into the middle of the fight before using Shockwave to continually slow and damage the enemy team while simultaneously reducing your own cooldowns. If your team is engaged, try to stay back to save your team with a clutch Chaos Protection to reset the fight in your favor.
FAQ/Tips
Chaos Protection instantly resets the cooldown of Shockwave so it is best to use Shockwave right before Chaos Protection to get the most value out of both of your abilities.
While Chaugnar may feel invincible running around in fights, he is not as tanky as seem. Be careful in the later stages of the game when the enemy team can start melting you as you are still a support.
Being a support does not mean you are forbidden from taking a wave if nobody else is around. Do not be afraid to go to a side lane to quickly clear a wave before an objective.
Matchups
Assassins
Chaugnar can struggle against Assassins on his own due to the fact as he does not build as much damage as a mage nor as much health or armor as a tank. Making him very vulnerable to being singled out by assassins.
Butterfly: Chaugnar can easily escape from Butterfly if she does not properly use her slow and ultimate. However in a one on one fight she has the upper hand in terms of raw damage and sustain through items.
Batman: The stun from Batman can almost always be negated due to the multiple CC cleanses in Chaugnar’s arsenal. However just because Batman can’t get the most value out of his batarang he can still easily burst you down with a single rotation.
Murad: It can be hard for Chaugnar to deal with Murad due to his high mobility and two stuns on a single ability. Even if he is caught in one of Chaugnar’s slows he can be hard to chase down due to Chaugnar’s lack of mobility outside of his initial movement speed boost.
Mages
Control mages suffer at the hands of Chaugnar as their main purpose is made irrelevant by two of his abilities. Not only can he deny being controlled by them, but he can make it so his team can also ignore them for a time.
Aleister: At no point in the game should Aleister be able to get a full cast of his ultimate off on you or your teammates as Chaugnar can self-cleanse himself two times or cleanse any teammate that gets locked down with Chaos protection.
Azzen’ka: Chaugnar is this sand wraith’s worst nightmare, Void Cleanse is a direct counter to Azzen’ka’s passive as he can completely ignore all of his stuns. Chaugnar can run over this control mage due to Azzen’s lack of an escape.
Diaochan: Another control mage that falls victim to being completely run over by Chaugnar and his ability to ignore any slow or stun that she may throw at him. Because her kit revolves around slowing you to get off the longer stun, she can’t really do anything but ult when you get on top of her.
Natalya: This is a mage that does not care if she is dove as Chaugnar does not have the damage or hard CC to stop her from using her laser to melt him off the map. Try to use the movement speed boost to get behind her when diving, otherwise avoid her when the laser is up.
Marksmen
The early game duo lane is a major decider in how well Chaugnar will perform in the rest of the game. While it is more important which Marksman is on your team, there is some that Chaugnar would prefer to go against than others.
Tel’Annas: While Chaugnar can ignore Tel’annas’ slow for the most part, her long range makes her a pain to dive if she isn’t slowed by Energy Surge. Chaugnar may find himself near death before he gets in range to use a Shockwave.
Valhein: Because of Chaugnar’s low cooldowns he can easily stay on top of Valhein and slow him down enough for his partner to kill before Valhein can get enough movement speed from his passive to get away. The low range and mobility of Valhein makes him a prime target for Chaugnar’s slows.
Yorn: Possibly the most vulnerable marksman in the game, Yorn is Chaugnar’s favorite target to dive as the marksman has nothing in his kit to help against the void beast. Yorn can do nothing but stand still and hope he can kill Chaugnar before he dies to the enemy Marksman.
Supports
These matchups are much more common compared to others as they are the supports Chaugnar has to compete with. Because Chaugnar is more tank than support, these champions are more annoying than dangerous.
Alice: Being able to give her team speed boosts and shields as well as being able to silence Chaugnar makes Alice one of the more difficult supports to run at. She does a very good job of forcing Chaugnar to waste his cooldowns by essentially negating their effects with her own kit.
Peura: Just attacking Peura makes Chaugnar have to use one of his CC cleanses as the 90% slow would be too much to overcome. Combine that with the possibility of getting stunned twice and the massive healing of Nature’s Rally, Peura is one support that Chaugnar may want to stay away from.
Tanks
The job of tanks is to control the backline of the enemy, Chaugnar is very good at disrupting their attempts by making their more powerful crowd control effects moot.
Gildur: Because Gildur relies heavily on CC to be useful, Chaugnar can nullify any attempts you may try to make on your team. Indulgence becomes completely useless with a well time Chaos Protection. Chaugnar can body block Extravagant as much as he wants without fear of being CC’d.
Grakk: Chain can be a death sentence for any dps on your team. Using Void Cleanse to body block the chain without fear of being pulled in is a great way to make Grakk’s utility a lot less powerful.
Thane: Almost all of Thane’s kit revolves around him crowd controlling targets, Chaugnar can negate any attempt he tries to make on Chaugnar’s backline can be negatived with Chaos Protection and he can be slowed with Energy Surge to assure his death.
Warriors
Unlike the tanks, warriors have more to them then just trying to CC you or your DPS, they have the damage to solo kill both. Try not to engage on high damage warriors that can tank your damage and still dish out some of their own.
Skud: Chaugnar is basically immune to the kind of combo that Skud wants to pull off as well as being able to disrupt him from performing it on Chaugnar’s teammates. His goal is to get in, stun, ult and stun again hoping for a kill for his troubles. By being able to block both of the stuns Chaugnar can make it so Skud has a hard time escaping with a kill.
Wukong: Most warriors like Wukong build a more damage heavy build and make themselves closer to assassins than warriors. Being able to survive the burst of this monkey can be enough to stop him from getting out by slowing him with Energy Surge.
