Introduction
Natalya is a poke/control mage that is able to deal a massive amount of damage with her long range Lethal Ray. She is able to catch people out with her stun/slow ability and burst them down with her other abilities. Thanks to her inability to get cc’d while ulting she does not require very much peel as she can usually out-damage any would-be attackers. However if she is protected by her team she has the capability to melt DPS and tanks alike. Because she has to stand still to do a majority of her damage, she is very susceptible to other control mages that do damage and stun over time.
Skill Build
Passive: Arcane Fire
Abilities deal more magic damage stacking up to 10 times within a short window.
Ability 1: Arcane Spirits
Fire 5 missiles toward an area, each dealing damage and applying a stack of Arcane Fire. If more than one spirit hits the same target they only deal 30% damage.
Ability 2: Arcane Nova
Skill short that initially stuns on contact with the first enemy it touches or when it reaches the end of its path. When it makes contact it will turn into a much larger ball that damages and slows for 50%
Ability 3: Lethal Rays
Long Range skillshot that deals damage every .25 seconds for 3 seconds. While channeling Natalya gets a 500hp shield that makes her immune to CC while it is active. The shield is also replenished by how much damage you deal.
Early on you want to use both Arcane Spirits and Nova to clear waves, getting poke damage whenever you can. The most ideal combo would be to get the stun from Arcane Nova into all five Arcane Spirits landing before unleashing your Lethal Rays. This combo will get your stacks of Arcane Fire up to ten in under two seconds! However if you are unable to get the stun from Arcane Nova, the slow should be enough to land most of your Arcane Spirits before unleashing your laser. Landing all five Arcane Spirits is also a good time to suddenly use Lethal Rays as you will reach ten stacks of Arcane Fire within one second of casting allowing for the next two to be at max damage!
Recommended Talents
Flicker is a way to disengage if the enemy team manages to survive your combo and make it into the back line. While as Natalya you are very comfortable with getting dove during Lethal Rays, after it runs out you want to disengage as you will be able to get stunned and killed.
Sprint provides that same utility as Flicker in the sense it allows you to get away from divers. However it also gives you the functionality of kiting much easier as its duration of movement speed allows for more spells to be used.
Heal is a great choice as once you have committed to Lethal Rays, you are most likely going to become the most sought after target. A sudden burst of healing could be the difference in killing your attacker or getting sent back to the fountain.
Items
Orb of Magi is a core first item for most Magic users as it provides great sustain for early laning to help you survive until you can get more damage heavy items. However the AP/HP that it grants can not be discounted as it stacks up over three minutes.
Upgraded boots as a second item is very strong as it allows for you to roam and snowball more effectively with the movement speed boost. Because Natalya is a burst mage and does not need very much cooldown speed, she takes Enchanted Kicks for the Magic Pierce to compliment her high magic damage from her Arcane Fire.
Hecate’s Diadem is another core item that grants a moderate amount of AP and Magic Pierce which helps with Natalya’s already high magic damage. The most powerful part of this item is its Warlock Passive that grants 35% bonus to Ability Power. This makes all purchases before and after this one even stronger and more efficient. If it had lane sustain it would be bought first instead of Orb of Magi.
Frosty’s Revenge adds a very deadly attribute to Lethal Rays as it adds a 25% slow to the high damage ability. This item makes it easy to land every tick of Natalya’s ultimate to get the most out of all of your abilities. The Magic Defense also helps with long range control mages that may be able to break your shield without risking being deleted by Lethal Rays.
Because Arcane Fire grants so much if it is fully stacked, there is not a need for very much ability power at the stage you will you will obtain this item. It is better to get the 45% Magic Pierce so you begin to start to deal damage that is akin to Real Damage. This item combined with Enchanted kicks and Hecates Diadem allows for Natalya to make tanks look like Marksmen when they are blasted by Lethal Rays.
At this stage of the game the only thing Natalya has to worry about is getting off a full cast of Lethal Rays. The best way to do that is to buy the highest Ability Power item so she can deal more damage that will continue to replenish her shield so she can not be stunned. The massive amount of HP this item grants also helps in buying time in disengaging if you are stunned during Lethal Rays. Living in the later stages of the game may allow you to throw off a second Lethal Rays during a long teamfight.
Arcana
9x [Violate 3] gives 4.2 ability power and 2.4 Magic Pierce each.
Early Magic Pierce is very strong on Natalya as her passive to deal massive amounts of damage with early Magic Pierce. The AP also helps with clearing early waves and early kills.
9x [Benevolence 3] gives 45 HP, 5.2 HP regen per 5 and .4% Movement speed per.
Probably the strongest Purples in the game, this arcana gives pretty much every stat that mages without movement abilities want. Health to survive assassins, health regen to sustain against poke and Movement speed to kite and roam to other lanes.
9x [Crusader 3] gives 2.7 Armor, 2.7 Magic Defense and .6% Cooldown Speed each.
Because Natalya plays so far back she does not need to take pure defensive greens, because of her massive shield from Lethal Rays it is better to get closer to a second Lethal Rays with Cooldown speed then to possibly have your initial ultimate cast time broken.
Early Game
Natalya’s level 1 through 3 wave clear is very strong as well as her poke potential. The ability to clear a wave with just two abilities is very strong as she can then move on to a jungle camp to help her reach her level 4 spike faster. Due to Natalya’s long range she can play very safe while still having the potential to suddenly burst down her opponent if they take a stray Arcane Nova stun. Her roam potential is also strong as even if you do not long the stun from Arcane Nova, the 50% slow can be enough to get a kill. Also even if she does not land her CC, her long range ultimate could be all you need to finish off a low target from outside their sight range.
Mid Game
Group up with your most disruptive teammates that can protect you as you begin to siege turrets or take neutral objectives. Having somebody to peel for Natalya is very important in this stage of the game so you can get off an entire cast of Lethal Rays in a skirmish or teamfight. Another great combo partner is somebody that puts more pressure than you so they are focused while you can get off massive amounts of damage.
Late Game
This part of the game is when Natalya really begins to shine as one of the highest damage dealers in the game. When there is five enemies stacked up being slowed or stunned by Arcane Nova followed up by a max cast Lethal Rays, there is no other champion that deals more damage in a fight. Even if you are behind during the later stages of the game, as long as you have Frosty’s Revenge you provide a great utility by using the moderate slow that it adds to your ultimate to help slow advancing divers from killing somebody who may be dealing more damage. A stray Arcane Nova in the later stages of the game can determine the outcome of the game as you are easily able to follow up without putting yourself at risk. Natalya is very powerful if she is protected and able to get off a full cast of Lethal Rays.
FAQ/Tips
Lethal Rays can be cancelled after one second of the cast time by recasting the ability. This can come in handy in the late game because if you are sure you are going to be stunned it may be better to cancel your ultimate early so that it can some up again as soon as possible.
Because Lethal Rays is the most important part of Natalya, it has the most interesting parts to it. To aim the ability after the initial cast you use your movement stick to instead of the ability stick.
Don’t be afraid to stick your Lethal Rays when you get dove as you may be able to out damage a diver and survive more often then if you cancelled and tried to flee.
Matchups
Assassins
While Assassins do have the damage to break the shield from Lethal Rays, most of them do not have a stun afterwards or at all in their kit so you may be able to out damage and kill them.
Batman: Batman can be a very easy matchup as his mobility is limited after he uses the ultimate part of his dash as well as he has no way to stop you from using Lethal Rays. As long as you wait for Batman to use Dark Knight you should be able to get off a full length Lethal Rays to melt him down.
Butterfly: Do not use Lethal Rays until she has used Backstab as it is her only mobility ability and she has no stun to stop you once you do get off Lethal Rays. If you use it early it is too hard to 180 to continue getting the shield.
Kriknak: His high movement speed makes him very deadly if he gets in close as he can simply walk behind you making Lethal Rays a lot less effective. As long as you can get off a long range ultimate he won’t be able to stop you as he does not have a stun in his kit.
Murad: This man is the hard counter to Natalya as not only does he have a lot of dashes to make it hard to continue hitting him with Lethal Rays but also he has the ability to completely avoid the ability with his ultimate and Another Dimension that makes him untargetable. He can easily break the shield and stun you by using the first cast of Thorn of Time to get into range for Temporal Turbulence which will break your shield before using the second cast of Thorn of Time to stun you.
Zill: Due to his ability to blink behind you as well as being ability to turn untargetable with his ult he can be a real thorn in Natalya’s side.
Mages
The only way for another mage to really deal with you is to have matching long range as well as a way to break your shield and still be able to stun you afterwards. A lot of Mages have to use their CC abilities just to break the shield so they have no way to stop you from melting them.
Aleister: Due to Magic Prison’s ability to stun all throughout its duration it can be a very strong way to both break Natalya’s shield as well as stun her using only one ability. Supplement this with Matrix of Woe and he can easily kill you if he can get into range.
Azzen’ka: Sand Wraith is a large amount of damage that can eventually stun you even if Azzen’ka dies. Because you have to stand still for Lethal Rays you become a very easy target for the long range burst of this control mage.
Ignis: His stun is condition and is a big part of his burst combo, it is very unlikely he can break your shield without using part of his combo that is needed to stun you. Also you completely out range him.
Ilumia: Cataclysm has enough damage to break your shield but does not stun you, while it is nearly guaranteed that it will hit if you’ve already committed to Lethal Rays. The rest of her kit is more medium range so it will be hard for her to break your shield and stun you.
Krixi: While she does have the damage to break your shield and eventually knock you out of Lethal Rays. She has to get very close for her ultimate and knock up which should provide ample opportunities to stun and burst her.
Veera: While she is pretty short range, her ult will quickly destroy her shield and be followed up by a stun. However, after that she does not have much damage so you may be able to duel her with your two other abilities.
Marksmen
If Marksmen do not have a similar range to Natalya or do not have a way to stun her after getting close they quickly become cannon fodder to her deadly laser.
Slimz: Flying Spear has a very long range and has a very high possibility of stunning you out of Lethal Rays. However he may not be able to follow up as he does have a rather short range compared to other Marksmen
Tel’Annas: She is one of the only Marksmen that can contest you from max range that also has a stun. You should be able to burst her before she has enough time to normal attack your shield away before using Arrow of Chaos to disrupt you.
Supports
Most supports don’t have the damage in their kit to break your shield so their utility stuns and silences are mostly useless when used during your Lethal Rays.
Chaugnar: While he is able to ignore all kinds of crowd control, he himself has no way to stop you from using Lethal Rays even if he does manage to break the shield. He should be melted down if he tries to run straight at you.
Peura: Her multiple chances to stun you can be quite troublesome as she may not even mean to stun you while somebody else dives you.
Tanks
There are two kinds of tanks, those that can withstand Lethal Rays and stun Natalya, and those who have to run at her and get melted away. While most tanks fall into the second category, some can do the damage that needs to be done to stop you.
Cresht: Because of his massive health pool and ability to build a bit more on the damage side, he can easily close the gap with metamorphosis and stun you with Aquatic Shield.
Gildur: A lot of Gildur’s actually forgo tanky items to build more on the AP side, this can pose a problem for Natalya as she becomes a very big target for Extravagant. Also if he is able to close the gap with Siege he can continually try to stun you with Indulgence.
Ormarr: Because he has to use his only stun to close the gap, he should not be able to stop you from getting off a full cast. Even if you don’t kill him with your laser he can they be finished with your other abilities as he tends to build more damage heavy.
Thane: For being so extremely tanky and disruptive, Thane can also deal a good amount of burst damage. Enough that if he used all of his abilities he would be able to both break your shield and stun you out of Lethal Rays. However, he is very vulnerable while his abilities are on cooldown and becomes more of an annoyance afterwards.
Warriors
Tanks and Warriors are very similar in the fact that if they can’t reach you they can’t stop you from killing them. While most do have a way to break your shield and stun you, they may have to use those abilities just to close the gap and may not have them to finish the job afterwards.
Arthur: Because he has to save his ultimate to stun you, he is very vulnerable to your abilities as he pretty much has to run straight at you. Even if he does reach you without using Deep Impact, it will be hard for him to break your shield within your 3 second channel time.
Wukong: Due to his many ways of dashing around and to you he can easily reach you without being able to react as well as being able to burst down your shield and stun you with his ultimate. Wukong is a very strong hero if he gets the jump on you but otherwise can be bursted down from a range.
Zanis: Another case of he has to run straight at you before he has a chance to damage or stun you. Though his cleanse allows him to break out of your stun/slow, he still has to run straight through Lethal Rays which should spell death for him.
