Introduction
With crossbow in hand and one of the game's coolest skins, Lindis is commonly seen as an underpowered marksman given Arena of Valor's usual roster of speed-killing sharpshooters. In the right hands, however, Lindis is an archer that can attack her foes while staying practically invisible. Designed to spend her time in the brush, she can set traps in key locations to further harass foes that attempt to escape her grasp and slide through the brush undetected to finish off any others in a surprise attack.
Gaining a massive Movement Speed boost whenever she's concealed, Lindis is less about rapid attacks and more about consistency and good flow, ducking and weaving between the brush to launch quick assaults, getting the most from her unique ability passives and doing as much damage as possible while staying safe.
Abilities
Tread Softly – The bread and butter of Lindis’ assault strategy. Walking into the brush is all that’s need to activate this one, granting Lindis a massive boost to her Movement Speed whenever she’s concealed and turning her next auto-attack into a double-hit with bonus damage. The bonus attack can only activate every 4 seconds once used, but the movement speed can be had at any moment, making the brush a great way to create or lower the distance between you and the enemy.
Piercing Gaze – An active ability with a constant passive, Piercing Gaze reveals nearby target locations for 5 seconds when cast. Simply having the ability unlocked, however, will make it so every third hit on the same target deals additional damage so long as the third comes within around 6-8 seconds. A handy identifier will count the stacks beneath your target while casting the ability will allow you and the team to scout out nearby brush-heavy locations for any potential ganks – a great way to maintain map control with little effort. You can store 2 charges of this at any one time to scout multiple locations in quick succession.
Entrapment – A powerful map control ability, Lindis can fire a trap onto a nearby location. The trap will be visible for those in view for two seconds, but will remain in-place and invisible for a whole 2 minutes thereafter (unless triggered). Enemy minions or heroes walking over a placed trap will spring the trap’s timer, being slowed and revealed on the map and hit for physical damage if they remain on top when it detonates. Two trap charges can be held at any one time, with two being allowed on the map at any one time, allowing you to quickly throw out more as current traps are triggered.
Lunar Champion – Stackable up to 5 times, Lunar Champion isn’t your average Ultimate ability. With a mere 1.9 second recast time and 5 seconds between additional charges, Lunar Champion is a homing attack that strikes your target for static damage on top of applying any additional effects typically applied by your item choices – like the stacking Armor Reduction of Spear of Longinus for example. Whether you’re rocking the right items or not, Lunar Champion allows for quick bursts of mobile damage.
Skill Order
There’s plenty of room for debate when it comes to grabbing and upgrading Lindis’ skillset, but most matches tend to see her taking up a more direct role rather than hiding in the shrubs long enough for her sneaky trap placements to have as noticeable an effect.
For this, speccing more into Piercing Gaze early awards more consistant damage output by boosting the numbers of her 3-shot bonus strike. When used properly with plenty of Tread Softly activations, this is a great way to whittle down low-level opponents before they’re able to deal too much damage in return. Traps are a much-needed secondary ability, but require a bit too much skill to properly pull off to be reliable for most in sudden situations
Refer back to the Cheat Sheet at the top of this guide for a simplified level-by-level skill order, knowing that the idea here is to be more direct in your confrontations early on with a strengthed Piercing Gaze, turning to Entrapment much later in the match as staying out of the public eye and cutting off the retreat paths of your team’s targets starts to take precedence over Lindis rushing to an early grave through by letting her trigger finger get the better of her strategic judgement.
Talents
Out of the three Talent picks included in the Cheat Sheet at the top of this guide, no one takes priority over the other in terms of viability. It’s all down to the experience of the player and their particular playstyle.
Sprint is a fine choice if you’re the more cautious, covert, or curious type, enabling an extra boost of speed to get from point A to B or to more quickly shuffle back into the brush to escape or launch another surprise attack from a safe location. The covert types can use it to more reliably dance between locations or scout them out with Piercing Gaze. This leaves the more curious types to slide around the battlefield to place traps and harass opponents in their lanes.
Roar, on the other hand, is for those well-versed in Lindis’ arsenal and attack prowess. Offering a great burst of Attack Speed and Attack Damage early is enticing for those looking to hammer their opponents down from the start by triggering her unique passive abilities. Later on, however, the benefits appear less noticeable when spending as little time out in the open is the preferred strategy, as you’ll rarely get a chance to auto-attack before having to run back out of view. Much of Lindis’ time is spent running back to the brush after 3-4 strikes of her crossbow and a bunch of Lunar Champion casts – which won’t benefit from the boost. Take this if you’re looking to play aggressively for the chance of a strong opening.
Daze is the trickiest one of the bunch to properly pull off, but a great way to start a chain reaction of abilities that will quickly reduce the HP of your target. Entrapment may slow those unlucky enough to trip over it, but its slow fuse can mean its explosive after-effect can miss its mark. If you’re the kind to bait your target into your landmines, hitting them with Daze at the right moment will drastically boost the chance of them being hit for the full effect with enough time to sneak another underfoot for a second strike. If not, it’s still a great way to interrupt the whole enemy team should they grace your path together.
Items
With the unique ability for her Ultimate to reap the benefits of her item effects, Lindis' equipment choices aren't quite as straight-forward as you'd expect from a Marksman-class character.
Omni Arms is the atypical opening choice being built up with various low-priced items like Arcane Hammer and Chainhammer. Granting plenty of viable stats for a her role, its passive ability can be activated with each use of her Ultimate thanks to the strict 2-second cooldown it shares with each stack. For boots, you'll see most recommended builds suggest Sonic Boots for the added Armor, but War Boots or Hemes' Select are worthwhile options for those comfortable with her general rhythm.
The first mid-game pick is a no-brainer in Claves Sancti – boosting Lindis' Critical Chance and giving her an additional Movement Speed boost upon landing on. Spear of Longinus will be your next stop in place of Rankbreaker as it can attain identical Armor Piercing effects that, in the right hands, can reduce the defences of multiple enemies for your allies to take advantage of, rather than simply benefiting its user. What it lacks in Attack Power is made up with a slightly higher Cooldown Speed boost and bolstered Defence – a solid justification to swapping out Sonic Boots for the notable mentions up above.
Heading into late game, Slikk's Sting and Fafnir's Talon will maximize the amount of hits you can land on a target without overstaying your welcome. Critical strikes will be more frequent and far more deadly when combined with Lindis' unique double and triple-shot mechanics, with Fafnir's Talon leaching health on each hit and having its 'Dragon's Breath' passive activate with each use of Lunar Champion, dealing bonus damage equal to 8% of the target's max HP with each stack you use.
Arcana
Recommended item builds reject Attack Speed, instead opting to pull the important stat through Arcana. In this particular build, we're gaining copious amounts of Attack Speed through our item choices, meaning it's best to spec more into Attack Power this time around. Armor Pierce sits in a similar situation, so we'll swap that out too.
New players with access to Tier-1 Arcana needn't look further than Strength, Leech, and Stab for their Red, Purple, and Green choices respectively. These give Attack Power, Life Steal, and Armor Pierce that should enable cautious players to break down the HP pool of most tanks without running much risk.
As for Tier-2 Arcana, the choices are fairly contradictory to our item selections, but not enough to cause any negative repercussions. We'll take Pummel in place of Batter as the extra Attack Speed will be had elsewhere. Vamp and Fury can work in tandem to award Life Steal, Movement Speed, and Critical Chance on a minor scale, but relying solely on Vamp would be the more reliable option here. In the Green slots, the slight Cooldown Speed of Assault should help you generate Lunar Champion stacks as you spend them.
Then for those lucky enough to have Tier-3 Arcana spilling from their pockets, Bloodlust, Assassinate, and Skewer stand as the best of the Red, Purple, and Green you can choose from, awarding a double-shot of Attack Power, and plenty of Life Steal and Armor Pierce to help you in those crucial first minutes.
Early Game
A character that certainly excels as a Jungler, this guide focuses on having Lindis occupy a lane. Whether solo or grouped up with a buddy in the bottom lane, Lindis can harass with ease thanks to her ability to reveal nearby foes while preying on the idea that they can't see her.
As tempting as it is to start by laying traps all around the lane, the passive coming from Lindis' first ability will be a big help in clearing your first minion wave and securing that all-important second skill. From here, you're going to want to camp in the brush as much as possible, abusing the movement speed boost to keep your enemy guessing and attack while moving. This way, you'll be using up Lindis' passive burst every time it's off cooldown.
Try to aim these at an enemy champion while keeping your singular auto-attacks farming minions. Just remember to throw out traps whenever you don't have two on the field – preferably underneath the target if they stand still while farming, or behind and off to the sides of their potential retreat path so as not to have them trigger from new minion waves working their way down.
Kills won't be top of the agenda right now, but by simply making the most of her double-attack and 3-shot bonus, most enemy heroes will have to be cautious. Use the brush speed buff and a trap to ensure your safe retreat back to the tower if you're getting pressured yourself. If there's any downtime, get into the river brush and get that spirit bird down.
Mid Game
By now, you've probably started to roam the battlefield a little – either by running after the bird or getting too tempted to get the drop on enemies with your movement speed boosts. If your own lane is handling itself just fine, look to nab any Golem buffs sneaking through the brush and scouting out the place with your main. Not only will this potentially earn you a handy boon, but it'll help your entire team by revealing any enemies working their way through the jungle corridors.
The key to ganking with Lindis is, again, to keep enemies guessing. If they can't see you, they don't know you're revealing their location to the entire team every few seconds. Utilize the brush to move quickly around the map – usually just to the middle lane, and place some traps behind enemy lines through the river brush. Wait for your ally to push through, and launch your attack on while moving unpredicably through the tall grass. You'll almost certainly get your required 3 shots on a single target, slowing them enough to deal more damage.
The aim is to slow them through a trap so that they'll almost certainly take the full force of the delayed explosion, creating even more opportunity to either follow up with another barrage of arrows, or quickly toss another trap underfoot while they're feeling sluggish. The best can create a chain reaction of deadly traps, but timely use of a fully charged stack of Lindis' ult will ensure this level of play is rarely needed. Just keep moving – her Ult doesn't even require her to stop.
Late Game
Your mobility at this point makes Lindis not only a great tool for ganking, but a very suitable tower destroyer. Able to move around the map at high-speed, Lindis can make herself useful by passing through the likely location of the next fight, dropping a couple of traps as a way to cause some initial damage to those her team will soon have to put up with, creating a viable opportunity for them to launch the offensive.
In the middle of this Lindis can grab a buff or two from the Jungle and unilize the brush to quickly reach any nearby tower. The results aren't always plainly obvious, but the mounting pressure from minion waves in the later phases of battle can make or break a match, making Lindis' sneaky pushes a valuable asset even if the team thinks she should be staying close rather than breaking off.
If your team manages to push ahead, you can again use the brush to quickly rejoin the pack – usually in the middle lane – to continue the attack after harassing a tower elsewhere. Tossing traps on either side of the nexus towers will typically catch an enemy long enough for ranged attackers to get a few hits off, or make those caught within back up a little, giving the team more time to push through the structures. These traps are on rapid cooldowns, too, meaning it's easy to replace any triggered.
With the nexus having no brush to speak of, Lindis becomes far more brittle in the closing moments of a match. Traps are your best friend at this point, with her Ultimate being a skill you're encouraged to spam while staying on your toes to simply help the team through proxy. You might not see your traps trigger, or really know where the ghasts from each tap of your Ult are going, but in these hectic moments, you'll be doing damage to someone, somewhere – and that's all that really matters. Use any opportunity to attack the nexus and win the game.
Tips
Despite the recast time, remember that you can only have two traps out at any one time. Setting a third will negate the first
Lunar Champion stacks can be spent every 2 seconds, with one regenerating every 5 seconds.
Tread Softly is designed to trigger the passive effect of Piercing Gaze. Make sure to attack from the brush whenever possible.
Piercing Gaze and Entrapment are both great ways to dominate map control. Mixed with her movement speed boosts, Lindis makes for a great source of vital information. Play for your team.
You can start a small chain reaction of traps if your target is slowed by one. Place more along their path.
Match-Ups
In a sense, Lindis playing for herself is the best way for her to help the entire team. Both Entrapment and Piercing Gaze allow her to feed copious amounts of information pertaining to enemy locations, allowing her teammates to make informed decisions before attacking jungle monsters, roaming into enemy territory, or pushing too far up a lane. Therefore, simply playing the distraction is the best thing for anyone on Lindis' team to do.
Ensure you're not giving away her location if she's camping in the brush, and actively lead a target further into your own territory to give her the best chance to launch a successful attack – typically with more brush along the path for her to dive back into.
There's no one champion better at this than another, but ranged attackers stand the best chance of kiting Lindis' choice of target, or attacking before they get a chance to reveal her location before she's ready to strike.
When fighting against the sneaky sentinel, Control abilities are the most effective ways of dealing with her. Staying away from the brush whenever she isn't in view is something that should be practiced. Pull away if you do happen to be targeted by her crossbow bolts, as she'll have to reveal herself to the team to keep up the offensive. Once she's visible, control abilities like slowdowns, knock-ups, and stuns will typically hold her long enough to deal a decisive blow.
Keeping her away from the brush should always be the priority, as this will drastically reduce her damage output and limit her escape routes. When giving chase, know when to throw in the towel as she'll gain a major distance advantage the moment she enters the brush. Lumburr, Arthur, Thane, Tel'Annas, and Tulen are all well-equipped to deal with her antics.
